Fifteen year-old Martina Fenech yesterday kicked off the ninth edition of the Puttinu Cares football marathon held to raise funds for children who, like her, have cancer.

Martina joined President George Abela at the start of the 60-hour marathon at the Marsa sports complex. Puttinu Cares was set up in 2002 with the aim of improving the atmosphere at St Luke’s Hospital’s children’s ward where youngsters with cancer were treated.

After injecting colour into the ward, the foundation embarked on a mission to help those families who have to travel to the UK for cancer treatment.

It recently bought 12 apartments in Sutton where families of children being treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital can live during their stay in the UK.
