In his Christmas homily Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna did not abdicate from his pastoral responsibility in defending marriage and the family. The family, built on the loving faithful relationship between a man and woman, should be promoted because God Incarnate was reared in such a family.

As Scicluna rightly put it, our politicians should have the wisdom “to build and not to destroy the family based on the lasting bond between one man and one woman”.

The Auxiliary Bishop’s powerful words remind me of Pope Benedict XVI’s splendid description of marriage as “a Gospel in itself, a Good News for the world of today, the union of a man and a woman, their becoming ‘one flesh’ in charity, in fruitful and indissoluble love, a sign that speaks of God with a force and an eloquence”.

The family, as found in the Bible and properly promoted by the Church, predates any new legal understanding of what constitutes a family. Will our politicians be bold and humble enough to protect the family?
