It is a shame that there is little interest in safeguarding the future of Malta’s national dog, the Kelb tal-Fenek (Pharaoh Hound).

If it weren’t for a couple or so breeders whose interest is solely to sell the dog locally or abroad I am sure the breed would die out.

There is only one person, Jonathan Attard, who I know is enthusiastically doing his best to revive the breed. I wish him all the best.

There are various websites one can visit about this type of dog, but none of them are correct and they are misleading readers. I remember that when the Malta Kennel Club invited members of the UK Kennel Club to discuss the breed it was said that the Maltese were only interested in the name.

What the locals are failing to understand is that having a bitch and a dog of the same breed does not mean you are in business.

Even if one does this for a decade or more, even for a lifetime, one is not a breeder, merely a reproducer of dogs.
