As part of the national strategy to welcome visitors and make their stay on our islands more pleasant and comfortable, an effective strategy for directional signage on our roads needs to be implemented. Of course, this is also of benefit to local drivers.
This not only makes drivers’ lives easier when going around the island but it also eases frustration and improves safety.
Let’s face it, a local driver understands Għajn Tuffieħa but a foreigner does not, so why not say Golden Bay? Why change Valletta to Il-Belt! What are we trying to do?
Equally, there is no system to highlight certain key destinations.
For example, in the UK, they use white on brown signs for destinations of a historical importance such as would be Mdina, the prehistoric temples, etc.
The same applies to signs indicating the way to the airport, ports and so on. These should have a coloured symbol that is easy to identify. Signage is a science but I’m afraid our approach is illogical and amateurish.
It is also lacking in places and superfluous in others.
Let us stop wasting taxpayer’s money by using a system that does not work and, instead, stop to rethink the scheme.
