I refer to a letter entitled Organ Donors by Simon Oosterman (September 2).

Since this letter appeared in The Times, we have established contact with the writer, answered his queries and also processed the requested organ donor card. This has been acknowledged by Mr Oosterman.

The object of his letter was to put readers’ minds at rest that the Transplant Support Group, since its inception in the year 2000, has registered thousands of new organ donors in these islands and ranks as one of the largest organ donor promoters in Europe, percentage-wise.

Our committee is formed of volunteers who offer their free time to support and assist organ recipients and those awaiting a transplant of an organ as well as kidney failure patients.

We provide an online organ registration service through our website and we process an average of 400 registrations per month. During the period referred to by Mr Oosterman, we were experiencing some downloading problems which took us quite some time to deal with about 200 requests.

All these pending registrations have now been dealt with (including the writer’s) and the service is now back in order.

Unfortunately, instead of communicating with us through other sources indicated in our website, Mr Oosterman chose to rush to print and may have caused readers to question our philanthropic services.

Our sponsors, whom Mr Oosterman chose to involve, are very much aware of the group’s work. As the main intention of this letter was to inform readers of the true facts connected with the issue we do not intend to enter into polemics and, on our part, we consider this matter closed.
