The new scholastic year has just begun and the situation regarding St Thomas More College Primary School, Marsascala is getting from bad to worse. Marsascala is one of the fastest-growing localities and this stresses out our primary school further.

The school is overcrowded and because of this, the hall where most of the extracurricular activities used to take place was converted to makeshift classrooms.  The school administration is instead forced to use the parish hall located several metres away.

This existing school had been expanded about five times in the last 15 years and four years ago a new primary school was earmarked to be built to allocate about 250 kinder and primary students. This was confirmed when the Marsascala local council had a meeting with the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools director and architect back on January 14, 2014.

The site plan, including the detailed plans and building drawings, were discussed at the local council offices. We were promised an interesting and attractive building, including parking facilities for the residents after school hours.

During this meeting I can recall that when I asked about the time frame for this project their reply was that the plan is that the construction phase will commence the following year. More than two and a half years have been wasted and we have seen no progress. The site proposed is exactly as it was back then.

Unfortunately this means that our children will have to be cramped into the existing school until the new school is complete and ready to take the students.

I would like to take this opportunity to air the views of a lot of parents and teachers and beg the authorities to stop dragging their feet and take action.  We do not want more promises. All we need is to see this project finished for the benefit of our children and those yet to come.
