I thoroughly enjoyed reading Maria Zammit’s comment (August 13) about the fact that many families who work abnormal hours are living on the poverty line while at the same time land speculators become millionaires without exerting any energy, simply by holding onto idle land and waiting to recoup an abnormal increase in land value.
Ms Zammit gave a detailed exposition on land speculation, which made my mind go back to the time when I was following the teachings of Henry George as exposed in his world renowned book Progress and Poverty. He gives reasons why in a world where scientific and material progress is always on the increase, the poor are getting poorer while those who usurp the natural resources are getting richer undeservedly.
I have been an ardent follower of Henry George for years on end and would like to see the formation of a local organisation which would spread the teachings of the great economist for the benefit of society at large with special interest to the hard working sectors who find themselves the modern “slaves”, having to bear the brunt of local taxes while watching others with higher income but with more facilities avoid the payment of their share.
