I was very surprised, to say the least, when I read (August 27) that Deborah Schembri, who fought so hard in favour of the introduction of divorce in Malta, has been called back to resume representing clients on the Church’s Ecclesiastical Tribunal.

Way back before May 28, the same Tribunal banned Dr Schembri because of her controversial views on the indissolubility of Christian marriage.

One wouldn’t dare believe for one second that Dr Schembri’s views on the subject have changed. Neither do I believe that what was written in the Code of Canon Law on the subject has changed over a span of six months either. Or was it? I sympathise a lot with those couples whose marriage fails but being consistent in my beliefs and loyal to the teachings of our Holy Mother the Church, I voted “No” in the referendum of May 28, as I believe that divorce is not a remedy. Then why, may I ask, was there a change of heart on the part of the Tribunal?
