It has been more than three decades since a Maltese wrestler competed in North America.

Gary Giordimaina has just returned from Calgary, Canada, where he enjoyed yet another two very positive outings.

Accompanied by his father, national coach Jesmond Giordimaina, and international referee Abraham Vassallo, Gary Giordimaina took part in the Junior Commonwealth Championships and the Nordhagen Classic International Tournament.

Competing in the 55kg category, Giordimaina won the title after two convincing victories against Logan Sloan, of Canada, and Salamon Habit, of Afghanistan.

The bout against Habit was a nail-biting affair with Giordimaina edging out his opponent 6-5 on points.

In the Nordhagen Classic, Giordimaina disposed of his Canadian opponent with ease, winning through superiority.

The Maltese youngster then came up against Victor Lyzen, the German wrestler who recently won a bronze medal at the European Championships.

Giordimaina tried his utmost but could not match the skill and tenacity of his opponent who won the bout to claim the category with Giordimaina having to settle for the second place.
