Work should be completed within the next few months on a “positive parenting” policy, Family Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia said yesterday in Parliament.

The government had decided to work on this policy because of its practical and utilitarian aspects, with a view to integrating it with children’s policies in general, he told Claudette Buttigieg (PN) in answer to a parliamentary question.

At this stage, the policy is still subject to public consultation, he added.

The Family Affairs ministry describes positive parenting as referring to behaviours carried out by parents that prioritise children’s best interests, helping them grow in an environment that is free from violence and conducive to their healthy development.

The minister said the new policy will supplement former initiatives such as A Voice for Your Voice and A Voice for the Child in Care.
