St Paul’s Bay’s iconic wine bar, Il-Veċċja, was demolished this week to the disappointment of its long list of loyal patrons.

But the hangout, which has become synonymous with jazz music, is expected to be rebuilt within a year, albeit topped by a number of flats.

The owner, Tonio Theuma, said the building had been condemned, leading him to demolish it completely rather than restoring it.

He said he originally wanted to build a guest house above the popular bar and restaurant, but the Malta Tourism Authority was against the proposal because it would not attract high-quality tourists. “Since the building was falling apart, I had to make a decision,” Mr Theuma said.

He assured the public that Il-Veċċja would be rebuilt within a year and would continue to provide the service that earned it perennial popularity throughout the years.
