Britons are rejecting traditional pet names in favour of those normally given to children, according to research. Families are more likely to call their cat Charlie than Tiddles, while dog names like Fido are being overlooked in favour of Toby, Archie and Holly.

Poppy was identified as the most popular name for both cats and dogs, according to a study of 36,000 pets by John Lewis Insurance.

Molly, Charlie, Max, Alfie and Bella also appear in a Top 10 list for both animals. The study also revealed a craze for pet owners to name their cats and dogs after celebrities, with J-Lo, Shakira, Clint Eastwood and Will.i.am featuring.

And football supporters keen to show their allegiance to their favourite player are choosing names such as Rooney, Torres, Beckham and Giggs.

Other inspirations are derived from shopping lists, with some owners calling their pets Twix, Caramac - and Bacon and Kebab.

Brandy, Pepsi, Whisky and Guinness are also popular name choices for cat and dog owners who want to honour their favourite tipple, according to researchers.

John Brady, head of commercial at John Lewis Insurance, said: “What is clear is that human names dominate and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to spot much difference between our list and the most popular baby name choices.”
