A few years ago we, in Malta, were fortunate to have amongst us Pope John Paul II. This wonderful Pope, who has just been canonised, had expressed his great hope for this country.

How we applauded and our spirits were lifted by the fact that this saintly Pope thought so highly of us. He wanted us to be a beacon of light for the rest of Europe in faith and morals. Have we?

We now discuss divorce, same-sex marriage and gay adoption as if we are discussing a menu in a restaurant. Now, abortion is creeping in and when it does, it will be euthanasia next.

My late father had written a paper on abortion and how it leads to euthanasia more than 40 years ago. Nothing has changed. How sad!

People who advocate this may one day be the victim of a lethal injection. A frightening and sombre thought for anyone. Let us ask the new saint, Pope John Paul II, to intercede for this nation of ours, to enlighten people who govern us and to give us great hope for the next generation.
