The popular children’s story of Mary Poppins, the English nanny who bewitched a family with her magical adventures, has been given a satirical twist for this year’s panto.
In theatre company MADC’s production for the festive season, the nanny – made famous by actress Julie Andrews in the 1960s Disney film – is played by Alan Montanaro.
Written and directed by comedy veteran Malcolm Galea, Merry Poppins is set on a Mediterranean island during colonial times.
Not your average nanny, Merry Poppins is summoned to look after two bratty children, Mikey and Jane, and, together with Bertu, she takes them to a fantasy land where they can have fun while helping desperate Princess Fuzzyfluff and learning about responsibility.
The cast includes panto veterans such as Katherine Brown, Joseph Zammit and Luke Saydon.
The panto is being staged at the Malta Fairs and Conference Centre, Ta’ Qali until January 4.
