The health authorities should be more vigilant on pool complexes during the summer, according to an inquiry into claims of contamination at the Splash and Fun Park.

The inquiry was carried out by a board set up by the Superintendent of Public Health to look into how the Environmental Health Directorate handled the claims, which made the headlines a few weeks ago.

The board did not identify any public official as negligent or guilty of any omission and did not consider the public was exposed to any risk.

Although the contamination, identified on July 12, was deemed to have been handled well, no repeat sampling was immediately carried out. Samples were taken 12 days later.

The board criticised the department for only taking the case up again when a second complaint was received.

It recommended written guidelines should be established on action to be taken in these instances.

Splash and Fun Park’s management has insisted that its pools were always safe for the public. It said that a toilet sink was contaminated when it was mistakenly attached to a second-hand water supply instead of the water mains. The situation was rectified immediately.
