Last year I wrote a letter in The Times about the fact that the swimmer zone markers were being kept in place by attaching them to a couple of bricks tied together with wire rope.

Photos that were published showed clearly that these bricks were not being collected at the end of the season with the result that places like Xlendi Bay and other swimming/diving sites are littered with unused bricks from previous seasons.

This is happening because it entails much more work to collect the swimmer zone markers and retrieve the bricks than just cutting them loose and retrieving the markers.

I am enclosing a picture taken on October 20 at Xlendi which shows that the situation has remained the same. With every swimming season that pases, the pollution is getting worse.

I noticed a call for tenders by Transport Malta (ref CT 2114/2012, Advert Ref CT 200/2012 ) for a service to place and retrieve the swimmer zone marker buoys for the period 2013 and 2014.

Can the ministry involved please let us know if action has been taken to ensure that the contractor selected will use proper weights and that all of them are picked up at the end of the season?
