Last Sunday I and five other septuagenarians attended the protest rally against corruption in Valletta. We recognised many people who had joined the protest and soon we were walking down Republic Street where Simon Busuttil was to address the crowd.

Dr Busuttil spoke very well and was applauded throughout his speech. The crowds stretched all the way down Republic Street to Caffe Cordina.

Young and old booed and shouted ‘Shame on you’ when the names of Joseph Muscat, Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri were mentioned.

My grandmother used to say in Italian: “Dimmi con chi la fai e ti dirò chi sei”, which means “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.” This could well apply to our Prime Minister who is protecting his two closest aides.

Politics is in such a mess at the moment that I feel the Maltese are saying “enough is enough”. How much more dirt are we going to put up with before we have a change of government?

Why do people choose to participate in politics? Is it for the love of the country and to give everyone a better standard of living or is it for personal gain? Is there no such thing as an honest politician?

Malta will always lag behind because many politicians are not worth their salt. Bad roads will never change while contracts go out to the cheapest bidder who uses inferior products.

The poor will never know justice as their voice is weak. We are in danger of becoming an ‘I’m alright Jack’ nation which does not look after the weaker members of our society.

I pray that future governments will look to the weaker members of society and make sure that the rich protect the poor and help them by paying all their taxes, which will be spent on the most deserving cases – the sick and the poor.
