Is it just a coincidence that the leaders of both big parties served as members of the European Parliament before they ascended the parties’ thrones?

I also find it remarkable that both of them headed to the European Parliament at the same time and then spent four years there together.

Perhaps the European influence is necessary to change and modernise the Maltese style of doing politics.

Maybe a career in the Parliament of Malta is seen as being more obstructive.

Could the experience as a European Union legislator be exactly what a forward-looking party leader needs?

Have Maltese politics finally been reached by what has been common practice in business for ages, where external managers are very often the only ones who can implement real reform in rigid structures?

I believe that the change in generation and style currently being observed in the Labour Party and in the Nationalist Party is a result of the changing needs and perspectives thatthe Maltese people have been developing since the island joined the EU.

New blood from outside is needed to guarantee politics gets healthier, even if that new blood comes from Maltese people who were just not spoiled by local parliamentary politics.
