Three constables who admitted to stealing under €230 worth of petrol from the police fuel station were given a conditional discharge.

Lorenzo Persiano, 51, of Gżira, Tancred Mizzi, 59, of Fgura and Frankie D’Amato, 36, of Żejtun pleaded guilty to stealing the petrol from the fuel pump at the police garage in Floriana on Monday at 6.30 p.m. and on other occasions going back to February.

They admitted to committing a crime they were duty bound to prevent and also associating to commit a crime.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard how the constables stole just under €230 worth of fuel by siphoning it off without paying for it.

Before handing down judgment, she told them that as public officers they should set an example.

She conditionally discharged them for two years.

Police inspectors Keith Arnaud and Anthony Agius prosecuted. Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace appeared for Mr Persiano while Franco Debono appeared for Mr Mizzi and Mr D’Amato.
