Police were yesterday questioning a man in connection with a hit-and-run incident that badly injured a 66-year-old man, leaving him in the middle of an arterial road.

The victim was found barely conscious with injuries to his face and arms in Triq Mikelang Sapiano, Żebbuġ, early yesterday morning.

He had been knocked down when a car drove into his sulky, and sped away from the scene. His horse was not injured.

The police said the man, found at around 5am, had been hospitalised but his condition was not known at the time of writing.

The incident happened hours after a traffic incident on Friday evening proved fatal for a 76-year-old woman.

The elderly pedestrian lost her life when she was hit by a car as she was walking on a pavement along Victor Vassallo Road in Attard.

She was enjoying a stroll with a friend when she was struck by a car being driven by a 28-year-old man from Birkirkara.

Attard Mayor Stefan Cachia yesterday said the local council had received several complaints about the road from residents who felt unsafe walking along it due to speeding traffic.

Mr Cachia said he had filed an official request with the transport authorities to improve security on the road.
