A police officer who arrested a man at the end of a funeral is being investigated over alleged inappropriate behaviour, a court heard yesterday.

Police Sergeant Ronaldo Cremona arrested Pio Galea, 52, from Mġarr, on Monday outside the locality’s parish church, executing an arrest warrant for failure to attend a court sitting.

Mr Galea pleaded not guilty to violently resisting arrest, breaching the peace and disobeying orders.

Defence lawyer Peter Paul Zammit, a former police officer, said there were different approaches to arresting someone and it should not be done outside a church just after a funeral.

He added that his client had filed an official report and the matter was being investigated by the Police Commissioner.

Police Inspector Edmond Cuschieri said the incident happened when officers stopped the accused and he refused to cooperate and resisted arrest.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli granted Mr Galea bail against a deposit of €800 and a personal guarantee of €1,000.
