A man who slightly injured a police officer who tried to break up a fight was yesterday given a suspended jail term.

Anthony Galea, 39, from San Ġwann, was involved in a fight in Paceville at 4.15 a.m. on Wednesday when Police Constable Stephen Mercieca intervened. Mr Galea vented his anger on him.

Mr Galea pleaded guilty to disobeying police orders, slightly injuring PC Mercieca, assaulting him and breaching the peace.

Defence lawyer Josè Herrera told the court a suspended jail term would serve as a deterrent in the circum-stances.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna handed down a six month jail term suspended for two years.
