Transport Malta is to issue a request for proposals for the development and operation of an all-weather marina with up to 240 berths and shore facilities at Sa Maison in Pietà.

The concession will be for 25 years and the new operator is expected to operate to the highest international standards, Transport Malta said in a statement.

The adjacent area will have to be upgraded and remain accessible at all times. The investment will also include weather protection measures, land facilities for berth holders, electricity and water supply, and landscaping.

In agreement with the Armed Forces of Malta, the gate of the AFM base will be relocated inward to create an additional area available for this development.

Gozo Channel operations will also be relocated to an alternative site.

Malta has over the years seen a considerable increase in yacht ownership and activity, creating demand for berthing facilities that exceeds existing capacity, Transport Malta said.

The initiative, long awaited by the industry, was in line with the government’s policy to support the further development of the yachting industry, it added.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said that while the investment would generate commercial activity, it would also be raising Malta’s profile in the yachting industry across the Mediterranean and consolidating the island’s strategic position as an international centre of maritime excellence in the Mediterranean.

Proposals will be received by September 23. Transport Malta said it intended to conclude negotiations with the selected preferred bidder within the shortest possible time.
