I was horrified to read in The Times about the plans for Paola Square, which involve the uprooting of the trees, so I signed the online petition to save the trees from destruction.
Imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail from the organisers telling me that hardly anyone in Paola has raised an objection.
When my husband and I came here from England looking for somewhere to live, we loved the square in Paola, the centre of the community and somewhere for people to meet and chat. Whatever time of day you go past it there is always someone there. There is plenty of shade, under the trees, on hot summer days, and somewhere cool to sit in the evenings. Not forgetting the wonderful cafe there with food and drinks.
Don’t our neighbours in Paola care enough to do something about the plans for this square? Senglea did and their trees are now safe from destruction. Malta is fast becoming a building site; we must stop this wanton destruction and preserve things not uproot them. It’s time to say a mighty no.
