There is a place where those who love to listen to birds singing will be fully satisfied. Itis Delimara.

Drive from Marsaxlokk to the lighthouse and park there, then walk toward the very tip of the peninsula, where there are the salt pans facing Devil’s Rock. After a few steps you’ll start hearing the most amazing variety of birds’ songs.

Unfortunately you will not be able to see them flying and I suggest not to dare to climb the heap of debris and gravel that surround the area where the melody comes from.

If you try to see the birds, which I assume are beyond that heap, you are likely to be angrily shouted off by someone who does not want others to share the sight of them.

Be satisfied with the melody that comes from beyond that gravel and like me hope those birds are kept in comfortable cages, well taken care of or better... at least once in a while left free to fly.

That is, of course, if they have wings. Don’t be suspicious like me, go and enjoy the panorama with the musical background.

You may also happen to watch people working at the salt pans in front of Devil’s Rock. It happens regularly there, not like on the other pans of the area where sad-looking heaps of salt lie there unattended.

So, with the excursion I am suggesting, you can combine two unusual experiences in one trip to one of the most fascinating coastlines Malta has to offer: but hurry up before it is all built up.
