Sir Matthew Pinsent would relish the opportunity to umpire the first ever women’s Boat Race to be held on the Championship course between Putney and Mortlake when it moves from Henley in 2015.

Pinsent made his debut as umpire of the men’s Boat Race yesterday, keeping order on the Thames as Oxford, his alma mater, beat Cambridge by just a length in a close encounter.

Next year will be Cambridge’s turn to provide the umpire and Pinsent does not expect to be selected to represent Oxford in the men’s event before at least 2017.

But in two years time, the women will row the same four-and-a-quarter mile course as the men for the first time – and Pinsent would love to be involved in such an occasion.

“I like the idea of the women coming to London. I would like to be part of that in two year’s time,” he said.

“We haven’t quite figured out whether that will be run on the same rotation as the men’s Boat Race but there will be another race to take charge of.

“I will be happy with my involvement in the race going forward. Whether it is the men’s Boat Race any time soon is not up to me.

“It will only come back to an Oxford year in two, four, six, eight years time. It wouldn’t be right for them to send me around again in two years time.”
