Demdike Stare is not your ordinary electronic act by a long shot. The UK duo – techno producer Miles Whittaker and vinyl-obsessed Sean Canty – has its vision firmly focused away from anything that’s remotely predictable, let alone conventional.

Proof of this can be found on any of their albums to date but especially on Tryptych, a bumper triple-CD package released earlier this year, a compilation of the three limited edition vinyls originally released in 2010.

Displaying an obvious preference for construction of sound rather than composition of music, Demdike Stare’s speciality lies primarily in the way they weave their intriguing sonic tapestries.

At their core, these are inspired by Canty’s taste for the obscure and avant-garde and realised by Whittaker’s ability to translate it into sounds that are, to put it bluntly, best described as experimental.

The terms ‘bleak’, ‘cerebral’ and even ‘unsettling’ have been used by critics trying to capture some of the moods Demdike Stare’s minimalist music radiates.

That their name comes from one of the main protagonists in the 1612 Lancashire witch trials has a lot to do with the rather mysterious air that surrounds Demdike Stare, but there are other factors at play too.

The duo’s choice of samples, for example, pulled from an extensive range of genres and sources and manipulated beyond recognition, plays an important role in giving the music its dark, occasionally disturbing (albeit engaging) edge.

There’s also the fact that their music more often than not bears traits of cinematic sound-scapes; a hauntingly atmospheric amalgam that varies between subtle rhythmic throbbing and glassy glitches, and sprawling layers of mumbling abstract waywardness, with an occasional plunge into nothingness making itself felt in some places.

Demdike Stare will be adding another dimension to their music, incorporating visuals that enhance the music’s esoteric ambience when the Manchester-based duo performs live at Buskett Roadhouse on Saturday.

The event, which is being organised by Pinkpube, will open with live performances from local acts Cygna and Sonitus Eco to create the perfect atmosphere and set the mood.

DJs Brian James and Owen Jay will come on after Demdike Stare with a more upbeat blend of music. For more information, look up the event page on Facebook.
