The spike in the number of young patients with type 1 diabetes is a mystery that is being looked into by Pink magazine, out tomorrow with The Sunday Times of Malta.

About 200 children in Malta and Gozo have type 1 diabetes, which is not caused by diet and unrelated to the high levels of obesity that plague the country, with a marked increase being noticed over the past 15 years.

The current incidence appears to be three times that of a decade ago and the statistics are considered to quite alarming, according to the endocrinologist who speaks to the magazine.

The million-dollar question is whether increased environmental pollution could be behind the rise.

The story also features first-hand accounts of the mothers of children suffering from type 1 diabetes, who speak about how their lives turned upside down when the condition was diagnosed and how they are coping with it.

The July issue of Pink, Malta’s only women’s magazine, with a strong focus on fashion, also continues to meet and showcase up-and-coming local designers, while the photo shoot takes to the streets to shine a spotlight on nightlife style.

With the wedding season still under way, Pink also meets veteran bridesmaids – one who has done the job eight times – to hear some funny tales and tips.

More dramatic and shocking is the insight into the story, pain and humiliation of World War II’s ‘comfort women’, the last survivors of whom are still seeking justice for incessant rape and assault.

Pink is a monthly magazine, published and produced by Allied Newspapers Ltd and printed by Progress Press.
