Personality, emotions and soul – these are the three elements that Christopher Azzopardi attempts to capture in his portraits.
The photographer recently won the Photographer of the Year award for the seventh consecutive year (Malta Photographic Society). He has also won countless competitions both locally and internationally.
Azzopardi is greatly influenced by the great painters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
He studied art in Malta, Italy and France, and in Perugia was awarded first prize in engraving.
His passion for photography started in 2004 when he attempted to capture his daughter’s unique moments, who at the time was only a few months old.
“I immediately saw a great resemblance between photography and painting,” he told Times of Malta.
He applied the same principles he had learned in art to photography and tried to create a style that resembled paintings.
I believe that photography is a high form of art
“Sometimes I meet people who think that my photos are paintings. I manage to achieve this effect through good lighting techniques, use of balanced composition and post processing.”
He admits that his favourite genre is portraiture, especially when it comes to environmental portraiture.
“I believe that photography is a high form of art and in my work, I try to create an image with a message so that the viewer can interpret it in the same way as one interprets a painting.”
