I congratulate Mcast for launching free courses for workers. These training modules will enable participants to learn new skills. The education feature (The Sunday Times, January 22) explains fully what is offered and how one can apply for such courses.
However, the accompanying photo sends shivers down the spine. It is not a photo that promotes a safe environment in a woodwork workshop. First, the worker (model) has her hair covering her face. Second, she is wearing loose clothing, not overalls. Third, although she is just measuring the turned piece of wood she is leaning dangerously over a machine which could accidentally be switched on.
Participants in such courses should be shown clear and direct examples of safety. We should not give distorted impressions that a workshop is just another classroom.
The first things you learn in a workshop are safety precautions and preventions. At least that is what we used to be taught at vocational schools; and as far as I know, the emphasis on safety has been kept.
Just look at any occupational health and safety rules – they have become more demanding, so please send the correct messages regarding health and safety.
