The price of unleaded petrol has dropped by one cent to €1.50 per litre, perhaps giving car owners a slight sense of relief after a near constant rise over the past few months.

The same could not be said for owners of diesel vehicles, as the price of this fuel rose again to reach €1.40 per litre.

Kerosene also went up by 1c, to €1.40, while the price of gasoil remained the same at €1.03.

Last month, the price of unleaded petrol went up by 6c and of diesel by 3c, prompting an outcry from consumers and businesses.

Enemalta yesterday said the new prices reflected the cost incurred for the latest shipment of imported fuel.

The diesel consignment is based on what are known as the Platts prices for April, which fell by 2.6 per cent when compared to March.

However the 1c increase was brought about by “unfavourable exchange rate movements and changes in the weighted average pricing” when considering the movements in the closing stock and sales levels from one month to the other, the corporation said.

There were no consignments of unleaded fuel during April and the 1c drop reflects the recorded movements in stock levels, according to Enemalta.

The Oil Prices Bulletin, published by the European Commission, shows that Maltese petrol and diesel prices rank 10th among the 27 member states.
