An unexploded petard left over from last weekend’s Msida feast was found at the army’s Haywharf Base during a routine search for fireworks debris, the army said.

The Armed Forces of Malta Maritime Squadron conducted a search of Haywharf for burnt debris and unexploded shells, it said in a statement.

“In the course of policing the base and its quayside facilities, an unexploded petard was found and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal operators were called in,” it added. The shell was disposed of and an investigation is under way, led by Police Inspector Pierre Micallef Grimaud.
