The Animal Rights Coalition has urged pet owners to take extra care of their animals due to high temperatures.

Twice as much drinking water should be available in summer as in winter and pets should be checked regularly for dehydration.

They should not be walked during the hot hours of the day and owners should take water to relieve their thirst.

Farm animals should be treated in the same way and dogs on roofs should be banned, even if there was a shaded area, the coalition said.
