Apostolic Administrator Charles Scicluna will inaugurate penitential Lent pilgrimages tomorrow, also known as People’s Sunday, at Żabbar at 5pm.

The tradition dates back to before the Knights’ arrival in 1530. During the early days of the Order in Malta, the number of visitors to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces increased on Ash Wednesday as an act of penance for any follies committed during carnival.

This year’s pilgrimage will be held in Sanctuary Street. Mgr Scicluna will be accompanied by parish priest Evan Caruana, clergy, religious societies and pilgrims. Mass will be said at 5.30pm.
