Siġġiewi had started their league campaign on a high, with a win over Kirkop and a draw against Mellieħa, but a fourth defeat in their last five games last weekend saw them drop to the bottom half of the standings and they are now seriously embroiled in the fight to stave off relegation.

Not so can be said of the high-flying Pembroke team.

This was the fourth win in seven outings for the unbeaten Pem-broke who have kept the pace with leaders Żebbuġ Rangers and ahead of close contenders St George’s and Fgura United.

Pembroke dictated play for most of the match and their goalkeeper was rarely, if ever, called into action.

The first shot at goal came on 13 minutes when John Roland Emeka ran past a static Siġġiewi defence but his shot from close range went inches wide.

Pembroke were at it again on 24 minutes. Cilia and Micallef combined well in a fast counter-attack, the latter crossed towards Emeka whose volley hit the upright.

Emeka was on the mark on the half-hour. He was served by Micallef before firing home from the distance, the ball slipping through the keeper’s hands on its way in.

Pembroke went close to doubling their lead shortly before the break when Camilleri found the unmarked Borg in the area but the latter shot badly from a very good position.

Siġġiewi failed to react as the second half got underway.

Borg had another good opportunity but his effort was turned away for a corner by the alert Siġġiewi goalkeeper.

The one-goal margin did not do justice to Pembroke’s dominance but in stoppage time they scored twice to seal their win.

First, it was Lydon Cilia who rose high before directing a looping header past Cassar.

Then, Jonathan Mifsud sur-prised keeper Cassar with a grounder from outside the box to make it 3-0.
