The Pembroke local council has won the GreenPak award for best overall recycling, with a 54 per cent recovery rate.
Gżira local council won the ‘Most Supportive towards Recycling’ award, while the ‘Best Door to Door Recycling Performance’ and ‘Most Committed to Recycling’ awards went to Attard and Fgura respectively. Gudja local council was awarded the ‘Best Improvement in Recycling’ award with an impressive 96 per cent improvement in recycling terms.
The GreenPak Awards for Local Councils, instituted by GreenPak Cooperative Society and held for the first time this year, recognise local councils that have striven most to improve their green credentials. The awards were divided into five categories with three local councils nominated in each category as finalists.
Malta’s target is to recycle 58 per cent of generated waste.
Besides the trophies and certification, each of the five winning councils received €1,000, which can be used to support an environmental project through which the locality and its residents will directly benefit.
GreenPak, a Mepa authorised scheme, is the largest waste recovery scheme in Malta, handling the waste of over 1,300 companies.
