An 80-year-old woman who was run over when she crossed the road from behind two parked cars has been found solely responsible for the accident.

The driver of the car, 85-year-old Maria Dolores Degabriele, of Sliema, had been charged with dangerous driving after Carmelina Debono suffered a fractured left shoulder when she was run over on January, 24, 2009 in Swieqi Road, Swieqi.

Ms Debono admitted to the police she had crossed the road from between two parked cars and not on the zebra crossing.

Ms Degabriele said the woman crossed in quite a hurry and, although she tried to avoid her, it was too late.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani said it was clear the only person responsible for the accident was the victim herself who caused a “sudden emergency” to the driver when she had the opportunity to use a zebra crossing on the same road.

Ms Degabriele was acquitted.
