Ganu Street in Birkirkara has become a nightmare to cross. So much traffic passes from and to the Birkirkara bypass that at times it is practically impossible to cross without risking one’s life.

Requests have been made to the council to have a pedestrian crossing to facilitate matters and to avoid accidents. The council soon sent out circulars to residents asking them for their permission to have the crossing in front of their residence. However, when recently contacted, the council replied that none of the residents acceded to this request.

This makes one wonder what residents can refuse or accept. I don’t know of anybody ever being asked to have a parking lane or a lamppost or pipe driven into a newly erected and painted façade.

So why does one have the right to refuse a safety measure for pedestrians? This is somewhat confusing and does not make sense.
