The weekend is upon us again as we prepare ourselves to be bombarded with disco music.

I am writing this letter at midnight as Sunday, August 5, is about to begin. We listen and hear nothing, not a sound. It is half past midnight. We begin to hear the very low sound of bongo drums being played in the distance, hardly noticable, and we expect that the worst is yet to come. But nothing; the volume remains low.

What a relief – we can get some sleep! Being happy that, for the first time this summer, we have had a decent night’s sleep over a weekend, one cannot help but ask why the sudden change in noise levels emanating from the disco.

Is it because of a change in the wind direction? (If this is the reason, I would like the other reader noise sufferers to inform me through this newspaper). Is it because the authorities have actually understood our distress and taken action? Is it because, finally, our plea for help was noticed?

Or is it because the owner of these open air discos read our complaints in this newspaper and had a fit of guilty conscience?

Whatever the reason, we can only pray that the levels remain reduced and allow us simple folk a decent night’s sleep.
