Fr Geoffrey Attard (March 3) deserves plaudits for calling for a long overdue recognition of the achievements of Paul Mizzi whom he justifiably describes as “The father of the Maltese book”.

I will go a step further to add, “and a leading promoter of the Maltese cultural heritage”.

The publishing house he founded and (often at personal sacrifice) saw grow and flourish has been instrumental in providing Maltese scholars with an unprecedented opportunity to publish their research.

In this way Maltese history and its cultural legacy have been as much enriched as its literature output. I know this from personal experience.

Paul (or better Pawlu as he is known to his many friends) is one of the great Maltese of the 20th century and his legacy is enduring. He merits the esteem of academics, scholars and authors.

Malta has many times been parsimonious in honouring its truly great sons. May Mizzi’s achievements not be forgotten and may they be recognised in a tangible way.

He deserves our gratitude.
