Canadian-born crooner Paul Anka is keeping his promise to make up for a concert he cancelled 48 years ago in Warsaw because of the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy.

Known for international hits like the 1959 chart-topper Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Anka apologised to Polish fans for the long wait but said he was keeping his promise to finally sing in the Polish capital, the Polish PAP news agency reported on Tuesday.

Now 70, Mr Anka was set to close his 1963 tour of Poland with an evening concert on November 22 in Warsaw when news arrived of the Kennedy assassination.

Polish news reel footage from that day available on the Internet shows a visibly distraught 22-year-old Mr Anka apologising to fans in Warsaw for having to cancel the concert in the wake of the murder.
