According to the first book of the committee minutes of the Società Maria Assunta, elected on June 1, 1908 in Qrendi, the first president of this Circolo was Alberto Tabone PL. On January 28, 1912, there was a reformation of the committee and the president’s name was listed as Roberto Tabone PL. These minutes were recorded by Filippo Zammit, a prolific schoolmaster for whom the Qrendi school is named.

It seems that Roberto Tabone PL was still elected president up to 1913.

According to some documents, Roberto Tabone PL was the nephew of Dun Alfonso Tabone, the 16th parish priest of Qrendi from 1893 to 1926. At around 1906, Dun Alfonso Tabone was very worried about the lack of interest in the celebration of the parish feast of the Assumption in Qrendi, to the extent that he encouraged a group of men to set up the Circolo Maria Assunta so that they take care of the organisation of the external part of the feast.

This first committee appointed Dr P. Gius Frendo as honorary president together with the five founder members of the Circolo: Ignazio Falzon, Gius Asciak, Rajmondo Ellul, Mosé Zammit and Francesco Falzon.

In its efforts to uncover the past and give the due respect to these respectful men, I appeal to anyone who can give more information as regards the founder president of today’s Soċjetà Mużikali Santa Marija, Qrendi to contact me on marformosa@gmail.com. One of the society’s projects for this year is the inauguration of a set of portraits of the 21 presidents who have presided over the society in these 104 years since its foundation. The society would be very grateful to anyone who might be able to extend a copy of Alberto Tabone’s portrait.
