The Majjistral Park was the gathering point for some of Malta’s toughest athletes on Sunday as they took on the EC Hellfire Extreme Triathlon.
This event, now in its fourth year, attracts the hardiest sports enthusiasts who swim, mountain-bike and trail-run across some of the country’s unspoiled natural trails in sweltering heat. Around 50 triathletes took part in the full and short distance races and team relays.
The upcoming Ryan Saliba won the men’s full distance and national champion Danica Spiteri Bonello confirmed her no.1 status in the sport by retaining her title in the women’s race.
Promoters Hellfire Events are responsible for the organisation of other extreme activities.
One common aspect behind their challenges is to push athletes to produce their best. Earlier this year, the Hellfire team organised the country’s first Ultra Distance 50km trail run around the perimetre of Gozo.
Events are also planned to ensure the environment is protected and participants are safe.
The Extreme Triathlon winners received some top prizes from Garmin Malta Medcomms, the Bowline Outdoor Shop, Buff and Isostar besides Gillette mementoes for all participants.
In a statement, the organisers thanked EC Language Schools, the main sponsors of the event, Radisson Blu Resort, Pembroke Athleta, Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club, the Mġarr and Mellieħa local councils, Majjistral Park, photographer Sam Rondot and all volunteers for their support.
