Fools rush in. I cannot find a better comment to make on the letter by the Malta Tourism Authority’s Kevin J. Drake (May 23). He boasts of creating 166 spaces for vehicle parking. He even dared allege that prior to the project there were only 88 spaces. Did he or anybody from Transport Malta bother to visit the area and drive round the coast? Starting from the St Paul’s chapel right up to Qawra there are a number of official signs (see photo) declaring “free parking for over 250 cars”.

Therefore, TM has not created any additional spaces; it has reduced those spaces available by at least 66 per cent. The situation will be further aggravated when the national aquarium, which I approve of and am in full agreement with, starts to function. Dose MTA feel that 166 cars, even if occupied by four persons, will be enough to make the project viable? I am sure that MTA and TM will say that there will be tourist coaches. Good, where are the coaches going to park?

At the same time, there is more than ample space available for additional parking, even if given to a private organisation and parking will be at a charge. The reclaimed land next to Amazonia and behind the Dolmen Hotel – Oracle Casino can be developed with little immediate cost for the coming summer. The area, full of overgrown weeds, will cater for more than 200 cars and possibly even coaches. Give it to a private entrepreneur but do so with undue delay so as to be available for summer. Where are the families going to park? Can the Maltese family enjoy the traditional summer?
