A reforming drug addict yesterday had charges for stealing some €20,000 worth of gold from his parents dropped after they renounced criminal action against him.

Matthew Brincat, 33, from Qormi, was charged with stealing the jewellery on June 12 this year and on the same day making false declarations to the police.

Yesterday, Police Inspector Roderick Agius told the court that the charge of theft had been dropped by his parents and Magistrate Anthony Vella acquitted him of theft.

Mr Brincat pleaded guilty to making false declarations to the police about the theft and was placed on probation for three years and ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation program.
