A young man and woman yesterday denied injuring a policeman and causing €5.06 worth of damage to his uniform during a post-feast brawl on Sunday.

Raissa Grixti, 22, from Valletta, unintentionally tore the clothing and meant no disrespect, defence lawyer Veronique Dalli told the court.

The lawyer added that co-accused Clayton Galea, 24, from Birkirkara, and Ms Grixti had found themselves encircled by a group of people during an argument following the feast of St Helena in Birkirkara.

A fight began at around 4.30pm and the police got involved, with one officer getting slightly injured and his shirt torn, the lawyer said as she requested bail.

Police Inspector Josric Mifsud told Magistrate Edwina Grima that if she were to read the police statements released by the accused, they contained a different version to the lawyer’s, although he did not say how they differed.

Dr Dalli downplayed the charges and claimed that the damage to the uniform amounted to less than €5, when the inspector corrected her and said that it was actually more.

The accused are pleading not guilty to violently resisting arrest, assaulting the officer, breaching the peace and swearing. Mr Galea denied slightly injuring the policeman while Ms Grixti denied damaging his uniform and both of them relapsing.

Magistrate Edwina Grima granted them bail against a deposit of €500 each and a personal guarantee of €5,000 each.
