I would be interested to know the regulations regarding passengers standing on a bus.

I recently walked down to the bus terminus at the Ferries in Sliema to catch bus number 202 to San Ġwann to make sure I got a seat. By the time we reached Spinola the bus was overflowing with passengers and many were standing up. Those standing were told to move down to make space for new passengers.

Move down to where? The bus was so full we had to pass by the bus stop at St Julian’s without stopping, leaving many disgruntled tourists stranded. Is this good for our image? Those on the bus were already complaining of being squashed.

At Pender Place we had to stop to let someone out and an inspector got on, and seeing the state the bus was in – the air conditioner was not working – he opened the windows and roof hatches.

Along the way many more commuters were left waiting at bus stops because the bus was so full. As bus number 202 is an hourly service, passengers had to wait an hour for the next bus, and a place on the bus was not guaranteed.

This popular route should be serviced at least be every 20 minutes. I dread the possibility of an accident when the bus is so full.
