The Opposition wants to hold an urgent meeting with trade unions over Enemalta employees’ concerns regarding their salary and redeployment.

Shadow ministers Therese Comodini Cachia and Marthese Portelli wrote to all the unions representing Enemalta’s workforce and asked for a meeting to be held by not later than today.

“Enemalta employees and their families are going through a period of uncertainty and are insisting that their take-home-pay is likely to be altered while they are also being transferred and not everyone is being given the same opportunities,” the PN said in a statement.

For the Opposition, the dignity of all workers is a priority and it will continue to insist that every worker enjoy good conditions and the pay they deserve, it added.

However, the General Workers’ Union sent a letter to the two Nationalist MPs expressing concern about their request “after the PN publicly, and without justification, made unfounded allegations about the union’s work in favour of all Enemalta workers”. The GWU urged the PN to refer workers concerned about their redeployment to it.

The Labour Party also issued a reaction, saying Enemalta had gone bankrupt under a Nationalist government to the detriment of the workers.

A Labour government had put Enemalta back on its feet through foreign direct investment of €320 million. This investment saved the corporation and the economy, as well as safeguarding the workers’ jobs. In spite of the PN’s scaremongering campaign, the employment of Enemalta workers was guaranteed and their wages and conditions would be respected in line with their collective agreement, Labour said.

Workers would be given the right of first refusal upon the creation of new opportunities within the company, it added.
