The Nationalist Party has urged the government to reconsider its proposal in favour of State-funding of political parties, arguing that the same idea had been floated a few years ago by the Labour Party.

The PL in opposition had made a similar proposal in a select committee, the PN said yesterday in a statement.

On Tuesday the government shot down the PN’s proposal to set up a working group to make recommendations within a month, arguing that this would delay the introduction of a law on party financing.

The PN yesterday said this would not have made a difference as the law will only come into force at the start of next year.
