Opposition leader Simon Busuttil yesterday heaped praises on the Malta Dockers Union for safeguarding its autonomy by not aligning itself with any political party.

Addressing the union’s general assembly, Dr Busuttil said this was the key to its achievements since its establishment in 2006.

The MDU was formed by some 300 port workers who had broken ranks with the administration of the General Workers Union.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi also addressed the assembly, pledging port workers would be consulted on any reforms being planned.
